On December 19, the College of Pharmacy and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Translational Research at Korea University Sejong Campus held a pharmacy experience program for 24 second-year high school students from Sejong City. The event aimed to help students better understand the field of pharmacy and explore career opportunities in drug development and pharmaceutical research.
The program included students selected from 13 high schools in Sejong City, as well as professors from the College of Pharmacy, research professors from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Translational Research, graduate students, and undergraduate students. It featured a variety of lectures and hands-on sessions.
The morning session consisted of lectures covering the basics of pharmacy. Topics included understanding the drug development process, experiencing the role of a pharmacist through a simulated pharmacy tour and blood sugar management exercise, and learning how to protect health through accurate medication information. These sessions provided students with a broad understanding of the pharmacy field.
In the afternoon, hands-on programs continued at the research labs of the College of Pharmacy. Activities included observing protein structures in 3D through virtual reality, exploring the immune system and allergies under the theme ‘Friend or Foe?’, and investigating new drug development from biological resources, with topics like ‘Can orange peels become medicine?’ Through these interactive and engaging sessions, students experienced real pharmaceutical research processes and gained insights into the scientific thinking and creativity required for drug development.
Director Byun Youngjoo of the institute, stated, "This pharmacy experience program was organized as part of the high school-university collaboration project and was supported by the Ministry of Education's Priority Research Center Program in Engineering and Science. The program allowed students to broaden their understanding of the drug development and clinical research processes while providing opportunities to directly participate in experiments."
