On December 22, Korea University Sejong Campus conducted the 2025 Korea University College of Pharmacy / Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences Pharmacy Experience Program at the Science and Technology II Building and the College of Pharmacy Research Laboratory Building.
The event was jointly hosted by the Korea University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Department of Pharmacy of the College of Pharmacy, and the BK21 Advanced Testing Methods Convergence Innovative Drug Development Education and Research Group.
This pharmacy experience program was operated for 19 second-year high school students (from 10 schools) located in Sejong City, with participation from full-time faculty members of the College of Pharmacy, research professors from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
The morning program, held at the Science and Technology Building II, consisted of sessions on understanding the drug development process, experiencing the pharmacist profession through a practice pharmacy tour and blood glucose management practice, and maintaining health through accurate drug information. Through the practice pharmacy tour and blood glucose management exercises, students enhanced their understanding of pharmacists’ duties and the medication management process.
The afternoon program took place at the College of Pharmacy Research Laboratory Building and included sessions titled ‘Observing in Virtual Reality: Explanation and 3D Experience of Protein Three-Dimensional Structures,’ ‘The Immune System and Allergies: Friend or Foe?’ and ‘Drug Development from Biological Resources: Can Tangerine Peels Become Medicine?’ Through these sessions, students directly experienced research topics and experimental processes related to new drug development, thereby deepening their overall understanding of pharmacy.
Professor Byun Youngjoo, Director of the Korea University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Head of the BK21 Education and Research Group, who planned the program, stated, “As part of high school–university cooperation, Korea University Sejong Campus has been operating a one-day pharmacy experience program for several years to provide second-year high school students in Sejong City with opportunities to explore careers in the field of pharmacy.
With support from the Ministry of Education, designated Engineering and Science Specialized Research Institute Program and the BK21 Innovative Talented Human Resource Development Program, this initiative offered academically outstanding high school students an opportunity to enhance their understanding of pharmacy and to directly experience experiments conducted in the stages of new drug development and clinical application.”
Relatedly, beginning in 2025, the College of Pharmacy at Korea University has established the Department of Advanced Convergence Pharmaceutical Sciences within the college to cultivate individuals that will play a central role in the field of innovative drug development.
