The Korean Language and Culture Center at Korea University Sejong Campus is operating the “Literacy Through Literature Classroom” program for youth with support from the National Institute of Korean Language.
The “Literacy Through Literature Classroom” is designed to enhance adolescents’ literacy skills and sensitivity to language and culture through literature-based reading, discussion, and writing activities. As the importance of reading comprehension and expressive abilities continues to grow, the program aims to help students develop practical literacy competencies by encouraging them to engage deeply with literary works and express their thoughts through language.
The program is offered to middle and high school students who use public and school libraries nationwide and is conducted through participatory classes held at library sites. Participants engage in structured pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading activities using the designated books: I Am the Subway, My Name Is Orang, To the Me I Do Not Know, and Sowing. Two additional books are scheduled to be added after July.
In particular, before reading the selected works, students participate in activities such as idea-stimulating exercises, preparatory learning sessions, and literary terminology activities to increase their interest in the texts. During the reading process, they discuss the characters and themes with their peers, gaining a deeper understanding of the works from diverse perspectives. After reading, students take part in activities focused on reviewing, analyzing, and extending their understanding, as well as collaborative projects and presentations, providing opportunities to express and share their reading experiences and thoughts.
Applications for the “Literacy Through Literature Classroom” are open from June 1, 2026, to 5:00 p.m. on November 20, 2026. Applications can be submitted through the online form:
